FAQs Installation and Maintenance
Which standards do you commission and maintain to?
AS 1851: This is the primary standard for the routine servicing of fire protection systems and equipment. It dictates the frequency and type of maintenance required for various systems like extinguishers, hydrants, alarms, etc.
AS 1670: Covers the design, installation, and commissioning of fire detection and alarm systems.
AS 2419: Pertains to fire hydrant installations, including system design, installation, and commissioning.
AS 3745: Deals with planning for emergencies in facilities.
AS 2118: Governs the design, installation, testing and performance of sprinkler systems to ensure effective fire suppression based on building classification, hazard level and occupancy type.
AS 2941: Ensures fire pumps provide reliable water flow and pressure to support sprinkler and hydrant systems during an emergency.
What is the maintenance frequency for fire equipment and systems
The frequency varies by equipment type, as outlined in AS 1851. For example:
- Fire extinguishers typically require inspections every six months and full servicing annually.
- Fire hose reels are usually inspected every six months.
- Fire hydrants are often inspected every six months, with more in-depth testing (like flow testing) annually and major overhauls every five years.
ALCAN Fire Safety can provide detailed schedules based on Australian Standards.
Why is fire system commissioning required?
Commissioning is required to demonstrate compliance with Australian Standards and NCC requirements. It forms part of the certification and occupancy approval process and confirms systems will operate reliably in an emergency.
What documentation is provided after commissioning?
Following commissioning, we provide the required test results and compliance documentation to support certification, handover and regulatory requirements.
Do you provide ongoing inspection and maintenance after commissioning?
Yes. ALCAN Fire Safety provides ongoing inspection, testing and maintenance services to ensure fire systems remain compliant and operational over the life of the building.
