FAQs Installation and Maintenance

  • AS 1851: This is the primary standard for the routine servicing of fire protection systems and equipment. It dictates the frequency and type of maintenance required for various systems like extinguishers, hydrants, alarms, etc.

  • AS 1670: Covers the design, installation, and commissioning of fire detection and alarm systems.

  • AS 2419: Pertains to fire hydrant installations, including system design, installation, and commissioning.

  • AS 3745: Deals with planning for emergencies in facilities.

  • AS 2118: Governs the design, installation, testing and performance of sprinkler systems to ensure effective fire suppression based on building classification, hazard level and occupancy type.

  • AS 2941: Ensures fire pumps provide reliable water flow and pressure to support sprinkler and hydrant systems during an emergency.

The frequency varies by equipment type, as outlined in AS 1851. For example:

  • Fire extinguishers typically require inspections every six months and full servicing annually.
  • Fire hose reels are usually inspected every six months.
  • Fire hydrants are often inspected every six months, with more in-depth testing (like flow testing) annually and major overhauls every five years.

ALCAN Fire Safety can provide detailed schedules based on Australian Standards.

Commissioning is required to demonstrate compliance with Australian Standards and NCC requirements. It forms part of the certification and occupancy approval process and confirms systems will operate reliably in an emergency.

Following commissioning, we provide the required test results and compliance documentation to support certification, handover and regulatory requirements.

Yes. ALCAN Fire Safety provides ongoing inspection, testing and maintenance services to ensure fire systems remain compliant and operational over the life of the building.
